Belonging

A Fiber x Data Art Exploration

Belonging is the synthesis of data art collected and created by Baylor University students in the Art as Civic Practice class and the fiber art of the Fiber Surface Design class. This project aims to hold vigil for what and who has been lost within the community of Waco within recent years. With an organic approach to collecting, interpreting, and displaying the data volunteered by community members regarding their experience of “Belonging” we have received an array of participation from the local public. Collecting samples from the local Farmer’s Market and Flea Market, we have taken our initial responses for review to prepare for artistic display. This piece will become a traveling dataset in the form of a triptych composed of three panels connected through common threads, making a 3D Venn Diagram.

Belonging reflects the community it comes from in addition to creating connection between communities experiencing the same forms of loss and regeneration. In sharing the personal accounts through the widened lens of the collective, this piece records the changing faces of our home and how we all find ourselves “belonging” within it.

Pertenencia es la síntesis de arte de datos recogidos y creados por estudiantes de la Universidad de Baylor en la clase Arte como Práctica Cívica y el arte textil de la clase de Diseño de Superficies Textiles. Este proyecto tiene como objetivo vigilar qué y quiénes se han perdido dentro de la comunidad de Waco en los últimos años. Con un enfoque orgánico para recopilar, interpretar y mostrar los datos ofrecidos por los miembros de la comunidad sobre su experiencia de “Pertenencia”, hemos recibido una amplia participación del público local. Recogiendo muestras del mercado local de agricultores y del mercadillo, hemos tomado nuestras respuestas iniciales para reseñalas y prepararnos para la exhibición artística. Esta pieza se convertirá en un conjunto de datos itinerante en forma de tríptico compuesto por tres paneles conectados por hilos comunes, formando un diagrama de Venn.

Pertenecer refleja la comunidad de la que proviene, además de crear conexiones entre comunidades que experimentan las mismas formas de pérdida y regeneración. Al compartir los relatos personales a través de la perspectiva ampliada del colectivo, esta pieza recoge los rostros cambiantes de nuestro hogar y cómo todos nos encontramos “perteneciendo a él”.
